This feature will be available to all customers on June 30, 2026.

1. Lock editing from the workspace

Lock editing prevents any further changes to the edition's content. Owners and Admins can apply it directly from the Planner or List view without opening the edition.

🛠️ How it works:

  • Navigate to your series workspace.
  • Find the edition you want to lock.
  • Click the three-dot overflow menu next to the edition.
  • Select "Lock edition" to open the Lock edition modal.
  • Toggle on "Lock editing."
  • The lock takes effect immediately. A confirmation toast reads "Editing locked" and a lock icon appears on the edition row in List view.

Note: When Lock editing is on, the edition becomes read-only for all series collaborators — including other Admins and Owners. To make changes, an Admin must remove the lock first.

2. Lock editing from the editor

Owners and Admins can also apply Lock editing from inside the editor using the padlock icon in the toolbar.

🛠️ How it works:

  • Open the edition you want to lock.
  • Click the padlock icon in the editor toolbar — between the Request approvals icon and the "Send a test" button.
  • Toggle on "Lock editing."
  • The lock takes effect immediately. A banner appears at the top of the edition indicating it is edit-locked.
    • Members see the name of the Admin or Owner who applied the lock.
    • Admins see a button in the banner to unlock editing.

Note: Anyone actively editing when Lock editing is applied is redirected to the read-only view immediately — no page reload required. Duplicating is also disabled while Lock editing is active.

3. Lock sending from the workspace

Lock sending disables the ability to send the edition. It can be applied independently of Lock editing — editing remains available unless Lock editing is also on.

🛠️ How it works:

  • Navigate to your series workspace.
  • Find the edition you want to lock.
  • Click the three-dot overflow menu next to the edition.
  • Select "Lock edition" to open the Lock edition modal.
  • Toggle on "Lock sending."
  • The lock takes effect immediately. A confirmation toast reads "Sending locked."

Note: Scheduled sends must be unscheduled before Lock sending can be applied. Test sends remain available in all lock states.

4. Lock sending from the editor

Lock sending can also be applied from inside the editor using the padlock icon in the toolbar.

🛠️ How it works:

  • Open the edition you want to lock.
  • Click the padlock icon in the editor toolbar — between the Request approvals icon and the "Send a test" button.
  • Toggle on "Lock sending."
  • The lock takes effect immediately. The send button is disabled with a tooltip explaining that sending is locked. Members see the name of the Admin or Owner who applied the lock.

Note: If someone is in the send-flow modal when Lock sending is applied, the modal closes and they are redirected back to the editor.

5. Unlocking an edition

Any Owner or Admin in the org can remove a lock — not just the person who applied it. Lock editing and Lock sending can be removed independently.

🛠️ How it works:

  • Open the Lock edition modal — either from the three-dot overflow menu in Planner or List view, or from the padlock icon in the editor toolbar.
  • Toggle off "Lock editing," "Lock sending," or both.
  • The edition is immediately unlocked — collaborators regain editing or sending access right away.

Note: Every lock and unlock action is recorded for compliance purposes — including who applied or removed the lock and when. This history is retained per edition even after the lock is released.

6. FAQs

Who can lock and unlock an edition?

Only Owners and Admins can apply or remove locks. Any Owner or Admin in the org can unlock an edition — there is no concept of "only the person who locked it can unlock it." Members cannot access the Lock edition modal.

What is the difference between Lock editing and Lock sending?

They are independent controls. Lock editing makes the edition read-only — test sends and regular sends still work unless send lock is also on. Lock sending disables the send button — editing remains available unless edit lock is also on. You can apply either, both, or neither.

Can an Admin edit their own locked edition?

No. When edit lock is on, the edition is read-only for everyone in the org, including Admins. To make changes, an Admin must unlock the edition first via the Lock edition modal.

Can I still send a test of a locked edition?

Yes. Test sends are available in all lock states. Only the regular send is blocked when send lock is on.

Can I duplicate a locked edition?

No. Duplicating is disabled while edit lock is active.

What happens to someone actively editing when a lock is applied?

They are redirected to the read-only view immediately. Lock changes take effect in real time — no page reload is required.

What happens if someone is in the send-flow modal when send lock is turned on?

The modal closes and the user is redirected back to the editor. The send button then shows as disabled with a tooltip.

Can I apply send lock to an already-scheduled send?

Not directly. You need to unschedule the send first, then apply send lock.

Can I still set target dates on a send-locked edition?

Yes. Target dates are planning data and remain editable even when send lock is on.

Are comments and assignments available on a locked edition?

No. When edit lock is on, the edition is fully read-only — comments and assignments are not editable.

Will collaborators know who locked an edition?

Yes. Members see the name of the Admin or Owner who applied the lock — in the banner on edit-locked editions and in the tooltip on send-locked editions.

How will collaborators know an edition is locked from Planner or List view?

A lock icon appears on the edition card in Planner and List view when either lock is active. Hovering over the icon shows lock details.

Is there an audit trail for lock activity?

Yes. Every lock and unlock event is recorded — including who locked, when, who unlocked, and when. This history is retained per edition even after the lock is released to support compliance reviews.

Is Lock edition available to all organizations?

It will be available to all organizations and is not gated by plan or pricing tier.

Does this include private mode (locking an edition to a single user)?

No. View locking or private mode is not part of this release and will be revisited as a separate effort.

Is there any noticeable delay when locking or unlocking?

The system propagates lock state as close to real time as possible, but there can be a small delay (sub-second to a second or two) for connected clients to refetch and re-render. The API layer also enforces locks on every mutation, so even if a client is briefly stale, edits and sends from that client are rejected with a clear error.
